End of May
Found out that a dear friend has terminal cancer. His wife called me last week. I can't believe it.
We are in the process of laying up 3751. Boiler washed, plugs out and cab stripped. I wonder when we will fire her up again. If not soon, then we should get on ther refrigerator car and get that finished. After these trips it seems that we sort of go in a funk. Nothing accomplished. I don't know how long I will stick around with little progress.

Return to normal
A week on the road and I am home. The Excursion to Grand Canyon left LA on Monday the 14th of May at 9 am. I signed on at 5 am and lit off the engine. I spot fired until we moved the train to LAUS. I fired over there and spot fired once we arrived until relieved by BK, the regular fireman.
I had an opportunity to ride the cab from San Bernardino to Barstow over Cajon Pass. This is a very very rare treat. For the rest of the trip I assisted in the engine service. I was unhappy about the leadership of DE, as, I believe, he has leadership problems.
I got to fire the locomotive over the road for about 15 miles in Arizona. Apparently I did ok.
On the social side it was fun RL and EC are real nice people.
Now we get to solve a nasty problem with leadership.

V-E Day
Went to Ritz Bros for Cinco de Mayo yesterday. It was OK, but I think I am getting a bit bored with it.
We are gearing up for the AZ excursion. I bought a new bag for travel today. Saturday we putzed around the engine and had a blue flag safety class. The Amtrak guy were OK. Tomorrow I will be at Redondo at 6 am to pump diesel fuel into barrels as the company will not fill barrels. 250 gallons of fuel and fill 1/4 of the boiler.
Thursday we fill up to the max and begin to warm it up. I have light off on the 14th at 5:30 am.
