End of October

Real quiet around here since the vacation. I am reading good books and working on the AHOC list. We have a halloween party, the Rollin' Stones concert and a MC trip to Inferno Gulch. I had lunch at WHS Science Department potluck today. Nice to see everyone. I filled out the GJ application. I wonder how far that will go. Probably no too far. C&C are off to the Med on a cruise, stopping in Lybia and Egypt. Not for me. All seems to be well at the Lodge, particularly after Tuesday's DD visit. Real nice time. CWS won the WS yesterday. Fun series to watch. Only 4 francises have not been to a WS: (1) Tampa Bay (2) Washington Senators/Texas Rangers (3) Seattle Mariners (4) Montreal Expos/Washington Capitals. Short list.

Rainy monday

Things are settling down after the vacation. We had a good weekend with the AHOC party at Dan's and a brunch run with AT. It is raining today and the softball game has been canceled. We are going to run late this year. MR is taking charge of cleaning up the financial books. The RR club is down until Nov 7. What to do?

Coumbus Day

MR and I returned from Boston this morning, twelve hours late. It seems that the Boston airport has radar problems and the place is a mess. We left on September 30 at 9 pm on jetBlue for Boston. I don't like red-eye flights. Boring as hell. The days were as follows.

October 1 We arrived at 5:30 am and got our rental car. It was too early for getting into the hotel so we rode around Boston. We went to Cambridge to see Harvard and MIT. MR worked some magic and we got into our room at 11 am. Sweet! After crashing for three hours we went to a bar to watch the Yankees beat Boston for the division championship. That night we went to dinner with Eric and Kathy in the waterfront district. Real great night!

October 2. MR and I are beat from last night but we rallied and took the subway to UMass and visited the JKF library and museum. Excellent trip. The Red Sox beat the Yanks for the wild-card postition. That night we cabbed to the North End for Italian. Wonderful neighborhood. Excellent meal. Must return.

October 3 A Monday. We got out of town and rode up to New Hampshire at a place called Waterford Lakes. We stayed at the Snowy Owl Inn. Nice place but the food is pedestrian.

October 4 We rode through the White Mts. looking for leaf colors. We found some. We stopped at North Conway for the railroad museum and an ice cream cone. We rode into Maine and back to NH via US2, an old haunt for me. That night we ate again the the SOL with the same results for food.

October 5. We drove south to Hartford, CT and over to Ridgefield to see Marilyn and Joe. Always a treat! Great meal and chat.

October 6 We all went to Hyde Park NY for lunch at the CIA. Excellent meal. Joe bought so next time it is my treat. After lunch we visited FDR's mansion and museum. It was a bit gloomy in the mansion but the museum was great.
We finished the night with drinks and a snack.

October 7 MR and I are off to Vermont We drove up to St. Johnsbury and spent two night in the Yankee Traveler motel. St. J is an old railroad town with a great museum and visitors center in the old railroad station. Food was boring.

October 8 MR and I drove all over northern Vermont. We went up to Newport and St. Albans. The latter had the old CV roundhouse intact. Great find. Back to St. J. for another boring meal. After Boston and the CIA all restaurants were doomed. It rained a lot in VT and NH with some flooding.

October 9, MR and I drove to Newport RI and stayed at the Best Western. Nice place. We rode around a bit and had dinner in a Pub. Good food. We watch a playoff game in the hotel bar drinking Cosmo's!

October 10. Up early to visit two mansions, The Breakers and Rosecliff. Awesome, especially the Breakers. Dinner at an Irish Pub was excellent.

October 11 Up to Boston for the flight home. It was delayed 10 hours. The radar at Logan is screwed up. We left at 2:30 in the morning and arrived in Long Beach at 5:30 am. Looooong day.

All-in-all a great vacation. New England rocks!
